Area 2 SWCDs

Welcome to Northeast Ohio . Rich in both natural and cultural resources, this 17-county area is home to some of Ohio's highest populations of both people and livestock resulting in SWCDs playing a major role helping the region maintain a balance between agricultural sustainability and "smart growth" of urban areas.

Among the special places here are the Lake Erie coast, including the unique lake plain soils; the rich farm land stretching from Huron and Erie to Stark, Wayne and Ashland counties, home to many Amish settlements; and the wetland and wildlife habitat areas in southern Ashtabula and northeastern Trumbull Counties.

Challenging the balancing act is the abundant rain and snow falls that help feed the high quality riverine systems flowing both to Lake Erie and the Ohio river including wild and scenic portions of the Little Beaver Creek, Conneaut Creek, and the Chagrin; Upper Cuyahoga and Grand Rivers.

5/22/2008- Highlandtown Outdoor Education Days - The annual Highlandtown Outdoor Education Days were held on May 13th and
14th at the Highlandtown Wildlife Area located in Columbiana County .
This event drew 275 fifth grade students from United Elementary,
Crestview Elementary, West Elementary and McKinley Elementary.

Fish identification, forestry, gun safety, native Ohio snakes, wetlands
and wildlife management are some of the activities that are provided at
this event.  Furbearer trapping and a turkey trapping demonstration are
also included.  Everyone involved feels that it is important to teach
our youth that the outdoor world has so much to offer.

Outdoor Education Days was established in 1995 and has been a successful
program ever since.  The event is made possible by the Ohio Department
of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife,  Highlandtown Wildlife Area;
the Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District; the ODNR Division
of Forestry and many volunteers.
