"Prevent Pollution? Yeah, we do that!"
| In 1979, banking on the tried and true
technical reputation of soil and water conservation districts, the Ohio
legislature passed HB 88 creating the Agricultural Pollution Abatement
Program. The program includes a state cost sharing program giving
landowners an opportunity to not only solve but also prevent pollution
problems.
Examples of eligible practices include waste storage,
settling basins, grassed waterways, and erosion control structures. This
neighbor-to-neighbor approach has worked to resolve thousands of
complaints and keep miles of rivers and streams clean. This process has
also solidified the reputation of SWCDs as being problem solvers, rather
that regulators.
