Agriculture Drainage -- Ohio's Biggest Economic Impact
|
It's a double edge sword living or just
trying to make a living off the land in this water-blessed state. Crops
need water, but too much is devastating for crops grown on many of the
poorly drained soil types here in Ohio. So proper farm field drainage is
vitally important to Ohio's ag economy. A key to farm field drainage is
the huge network of man made ditches helping to carry excess water away
from growing crops.
SWCDs play a huge role in maintaining thousands of
miles of these ditches in cooperation with their county commissioners and
county engineer. They not only help keep the water flowing by cutting away
and removing debris, but they also ensure the soil on the edges of the
ditches stay in tact.
DRAINAGE FACTS:
 | Average annual precipitation is 38 inches |
 | 9.5 trillion gallons of water drained annually |
 | As of 2001, county ditches measured 225,000 miles |
 | Only 4,000 miles of drainage ditches are
maintained |
