Water Quality

Keeping Our Water Clean-

"Why is it so hard to pass over a bridge and not take a look at the stream? What is so special about it? You might miss the scenic view or wildlife in a natural setting? Maybe it is inherent that we understand water's necessity in out lives...

Ohio Water Facts
bulletEstimated 61,500 miles of steams
bullet60,000+ inland lakes, reservoirs and ponds cover 200,000 acres
bullet1,400 species of aquatic wildlife call Ohio's steams home
bullet899 million gallons of water per day is withdrawn for 6 million people

Economically, Ohio must set water quality as its top priority. Prevention is the best route to maintain Ohio's recreational activies, reduce water treatment plants cost and maintain wildlife habitat.

The most common pollutant in Ohio by weight is sediment. Stream encroachment by removing riparian corridors and unrestricted access by livestock degrades water quality. Outdated stormwater management practices and 3,000 point source discharges are mostly located downstream of cities, but negatively effects larger bodies of water as the hydrology cycle continues. Working with people and companies in a watershed can prevent problems before they arise.
